LED Lighting – Your Questions Answered
LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are still relatively new on the market and as Halogen lamps are gradually phased out we can expect to see LEDs used far more extensively across a wide range of lighting applications.
As with any new technology people always have a lot of questions and LEDs are one of the most common topics that our customers ask us about. Below we provide answers to some of the most frequently asked LED questions.
How Energy Efficient are LEDs?
LED bulbs are incredibly energy efficient and use approximately 90% less power than traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs of comparable brightness. LEDs are much more effective at turning the energy they consume into light and so it is possible for a 4-watt LED to generate the same light levels as a 50-watt incandescent bulb.
How Long Do LEDs Last?
LEDs have a very long lifespan of up to 50,000 hours which is on average 133 times longer than incandescent bulbs. This is thanks to the clever ways in which the bulbs deal with heat which slows down the lumen (light) depreciation.
Are LEDs Durable?
LEDs are far more durable than other types of lighting. They do not use any fragile components and are therefore able to withstand bangs, shock and extreme temperatures. This makes them ideal for use outdoors or in industrial or commercial environments.
Are LEDs Environmentally Friendly?
LEDs require a lot less energy to work than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs. If less energy is being used then the demand on power stations to burn fossil fuels reduces and less CO2 is released into the atmosphere.
Incandescent, halogen and fluorescent bulbs all contain toxic heavy metals such as lead of mercury. These are bad for the environment and difficult to dispose of safely. LEDs by contrast are made from non-toxic materials, the majority of which are recyclable.
Are LEDs Safe?
Possibly one of the best features of LED lighting is that they generate virtually no heat and are cool to the touch. Incandescent bulbs expel 90% of the energy they use as heat and anyone who has tried to touch a bulb after it’s been on for a more than a few minutes will know how hot they can get. LEDs vastly reduce the risk of burns or fires making them a far safer lighting option.
Can I use LEDS in my Existing Light Fittings?
Absolutely, all LEDs are designed to work with existing light fittings.
Are LEDs Dimmable?
This question has a two part answer.
LEDs are available in both dimmable and non-dimmable options.
Due to the much lower power usage of LEDs they will not work well, or in some cases at all, with your existing dimmer switches. For best results switch to trailing edge dimmer switches which are designed to work with lower power loads and are perfect for LED bulbs.
If you haven’t already made the switch to LEDs then now is an ideal time to start. Thanks to the competition in the market product quality is increasing all the time whilst prices are being driven down. This is great news for the consumer and means you can move over to LEDs and start feeling the benefits in your energy bills.
